UK-CAB 85: EACS conference feedback, HTLV-1 study

17/11/2023 @ 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Our next face to face meeting will be held in London on Friday 17 November.
We will have feedback from the EACS conference from members who attended

Daniel Bradshaw, a virologist  from the UK Health Security Agency will discuss the HTLV-1 study he is about to start.  The Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV) is a virus passed on mainly by sex, as well as from mother to baby. It causes blood cancer or damage to the spinal cord in 1 in 10 people who have the infection. It is also linked to an increased likelihood of dying in other people who are HTLV-positive although we don’t yet understand why. In the UK, people at greatest risk from HTLV are those of black heritage and those born in regions where the virus is very common, such as the Caribbean or West Africa. Almost no HTLV testing is done in the UK, even though it is important to diagnose. This is because people who are HTLV-positive should receive life-long care in specialist NHS clinics and access counselling on how to reduce passing on the virus to their partners and babies.

Members will also have an opportunity to share their work and network. To attend this meeting, please register here:
