Ben studied Chemistry at the University of Durham, England, doing a PhD in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. He then joined ICI, UK’s largest chemical company, at their Corporate Research Division. He retired from ICI after 25 years of employment in a range of roles including research, product development, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and business management.
He was diagnosed with HIV in 2000, and joined his local patient support group, North Yorkshire AIDS Action. He developed an interest in HIV treatment, and joined the UK-CAB in 2002, becoming its Chair in 2003 for several years. He is a Community Representative on the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit Patient and Public Involvement Group, which promotes patient involvement at all stages of clinical trial design, development, and implementation. He has been a patient representative on several clinical trial oversight committees and British HIV Association writing groups and subcommittees. He currently volunteers as a peer mentor and support worker at York hospital and Yorkshire Mesmac (covering North Yorkshire), and is currently a member of the UK-CAB Steering Group.
